MOMENTS MADE INFINITE: Fall Line Press Publishes Christopher Lowell’sThirty-One Days

Fall Line Press presents Thirty-One Days by photographer Christopher Lowell. This landmark monograph chronicles the final month spent in and around his childhood home, rendering a portrait of the American South that is as deeply true as it is mythical.

Through Lowell’s lens, brief moments are made infinite. Bodies leap from roofs and fall from trees, suspended in perpetual flight. The smoke from a cigarette and the sparks from a firecracker burn forever. By intentionally stripping away contextual clues (both modern technology and clothing are scarce), Lowell frees his black-and-white imagery from any specific era. Actions captured by Lowell frequently outpace the shutter itself, encouraging the viewer to process the frame as a memory, seeing details not as information, but as emotion.

The physical object of Thirty-One Days was designed to mirror the ethereal weight of its subject matter. Translating Lowell’s gelatin-silver prints to the page required a meticulous dedication to craft. Through 68 beautifully rendered, spot-varnished duotone plates, the monograph is built with the durability and academic value demanded by institutional archives and discerning collectors alike. The rich ink density and varnished highlights communicate an Edenic world, both tactile and timeless.

Lowell’s artistic trajectory deeply informs the rhythm of this work. Beginning his practice in the tradition of mid-century street photographers, he honed an intuition-driven, impulse-led approach documenting global urban scenes with a 35mm rangefinder. Thirty-One Days marks a profound evolution. Swapping his Leica for the deliberate clarity of a medium-format Hasselblad, Lowell turns the camera inward. Drawing a photographic lineage from the Southern portraits of Sally Mann and the classical studies of Robert Mapplethorpe, Lowell bears witness to his own history.

As Lowell notes, the resulting images capture “a single month for most, but a lifetime for those of us who are butterflies.”

Lowell’s photography is held in esteemed private and institutional collections, including the Sovereign Collection and the Elton John Collection. The publication of Thirty-One Days expands upon his recent acclaimed solo exhibition of the work at Jackson Fine Art in Atlanta, following previous shows at the Stephen Cohen Gallery and Walter Maciel Gallery in Los Angeles.
