Red Clay, the inaugural issue of RADAR, focuses on the American South, examining one of America's most unique, complicated regions.
Each collection in the series brings together photographers whose individual photobooks combined take the reader on an exploration of a particular place, region or territory. The 5 books of the artists, Nydia Blas, Tim Davis, Maury Gortemiller, Laura Noel, and Anderson Scott are joined by a chapbook of poetry by the Pulitzer Prize winning poet Forrest Gander. The artists and projects were selected with the guidance of Maury Gortemiller who served as the lead curator for the collection to insure both the range of vision about the south that Red Clay is seeking as well as a synergy between the artists and projects themselves.
Maury Gortmiller’s Make Believe uses carefully selected lines from Donald J. Trump’s “Art of the Deal” and skewers it together with Gortemiller’s hilarious and often surreal (and always beautiful) photographs to create a unique and thrilling reading experience. Trump’s voice and his ride and years of politicking in Georgia get thoroughly RADAR’ed in this fresh and powerful photobook.
Tim Davis - Hypoluxo Road
Hop on in for the ride with Tim Davis down Hypoluxo Road but don’t plan to come home for a few days or to be the same when you get home. As much visual acid trip as document the dizzying sights along the way are sometimes hilarious and often Hitchcockian in the disturbance factor. Don’t take a deep swig on that Co’cola lest you be prepared to blow it out your nose when you turn the next page. It’s Tim Davis, it’s brilliant.
Nydia Blas - I Came Into this World High as a Bird
Enigmatic and beguiling, Nydia Blas's photo series oscillates between the celebratory - streamers, glitter thrown into the water, fireworks- and more ominous subject matter - a wrecked car, a handgun, hands covering a face. Through careful sequencing, Blas creates an environment where the tragic and the sublime co-exist in an uneasy, fleeting equilibrium.
Laura Noel - Smoke Break
Laura Noel's series "Smoke Break" depicts cigarette smokers - a group that has found itself under fire from a health-conscious public and government that has curtailed locations where one can light up. Insightful and candid, Noel's photos do not judge, but carefully observe individuals as they enjoy a respite from their daily lives and engage in a ritual that allows for contemplation and reflection.
Anderson Scott - Tama-Re
At the peak of the cult called the United Nuwaubian Nation of Moors, more than a hundred people lived in their compound, Tama-Re. After the cult’s leader, Dwight “Malachi” York was convicted of child molestation and the federal government seized Nuwaubia, these replicas of the millennia-old monuments of Egypt collapsed with little more than a tap from a bulldozer. These photographs were made in 2006, shortly before Tama-Re was demolished.
